Upload a custom background for Google Meet

February 28, 2021 by John R. Sowash

Google Meet allows you to blur or replace your background, but up until recently, you weren’t able to upload a custom background.

The latest update to Google Meet will let you upload a custom image to use as your background.

Teaching remotely? Check out my list of resources for remote teachers!

However, you won’t see this feature unless your IT admin enables it.

Custom backgrounds are DISABLED by default for G Suite for Education domains.

If you want to upload a custom background your IT admin must enable this feature through the Google Admin console.

The good news is that it’s easy to enable custom backgrounds AND you can enable them for specific users within your organization (i.e. turn it on for staff and off for students).

Additional Resources:

  • Official announcement
  • Help article for enabling backgrounds through the admin console
