How to Pass the Gemini Certified Educator Exam (2026 Guide)

March 5, 2026 by John R. Sowash

Gemini educator exam certificate awarded to John Sowash

Back in 2009, earning my first Google Certification completely changed the trajectory of my teaching career. It gave me a unique purpose in my high school science classroom, connected me with some amazing educators, and eventually led me to start the Google Certification Academy.

When you challenge yourself to learn something new, good things usually happen!

That’s why I am so incredibly excited about Google’s newest credential: the Gemini Certified Educator exam.

If you’ve been experimenting with AI and want to demonstrate your ability to use these powerful new tools safely and effectively, this certification is for you. Earning this badge proves you know how to leverage AI to save time, create engaging lesson plans, and support your students.

Since this is a brand new exam, you probably have some questions. I’ve put together this guide to share exactly what you can expect, how the test works, and how to pass it!

Want to make sure you are totally prepared before you hit “start” on your exam?

I have put together a comprehensive Gemini Education exam study guide. It includes a complete checklist of all the skills assessed on the exam, plus links to free learning resources to help you brush up on any areas where you feel stuck.

Exam Format: What to Expect

Let’s start with the logistics. If you have taken the Google Certified Educator Level 1 or Level 2 exams in the past, the format of this test will feel very familiar.

Here is a quick breakdown of the Gemini Certified Educator exam details for 2026:

  • Cost: Free! (through June 2026)
  • Format: 37 Multiple Choice questions
  • Passing score: 80%
  • Time Limit: 4+ hours (You will have plenty of time!)
  • Validity: The certification is valid for 36 months.
  • Open Book: Yes! The exam is completely open book and open note.

To register, you simply head over to the Google for Education Certification portal, sign up, and you’ll get an email to launch your exam. Just remember that once you register, you have 14 days to start the test.

What’s on the Test?

You don’t need to be a computer scientist or a coding expert to pass this test. The exam focuses on practical, everyday applications of AI for K-12 teachers.

While every test taker gets a slightly different mix of questions, the exam is broken down into three main categories:

1. The Gemini App (~18 Questions)

The bulk of the exam focuses on how to use the standard Gemini App (Gemini.google.com). You’ll need to know how to use Gemini to generate images, create rubrics, and write lesson plans. You should also be familiar with specific features like “Guided Learning” (which uses open-ended questions to help students dive deeper into a topic without just giving them the answer) and the “Double Check” feature to cross-reference AI responses.

Note: The exam focuses on the standard features available to all education domains. You do not need a premium Gemini Advanced account to pass!

2. NotebookLM (~9 Questions)

NotebookLM is an incredible AI tool that allows you to upload your own resources (like PDFs, Docs, or Slides) and interact with them. You’ll want to be familiar with how to use NotebookLM to summarize information, generate FAQs, create mind maps, and generate those awesome audio summaries.

3. AI Literacy (~10 Questions)

Using AI responsibly is a huge focus for Google. You can expect questions about how AI models work, how to recognize “AI hallucinations” (when the AI makes up fake information), and how to evaluate AI content for bias. You’ll also see questions about data privacy, security policies, and how to develop strategies for identifying AI content in student work.

My Top Tips for Passing the Exam

I have helped more than 3,000 educators get Google Certified since 2013. If you are gearing up to take the Gemini exam, here are my top tips for success:

  • Use the right device: Take the exam on a Chromebook, Mac, or Windows computer using the Google Chrome browser. Do not try to take this exam on an iPad or mobile device!
  • Use your resources: Because the exam is open book, you are actually encouraged to research! Keep a tab open to Google Search, and yes, you can absolutely use Gemini to help you answer questions on the Gemini exam!
  • Think pedagogically: When answering questions, always think about the teaching strategy behind the tool. For example, if a student uses AI to generate an essay with fake historical events, the best solution isn’t to ban all digital tools; it’s to design an activity where students compare AI summaries against verified textbooks to learn about fact-checking.
