Do AI detectors work?

April 16, 2024 by John R. Sowash

If you are a classroom teacher, you probably have some concerns about students using AI on your assignments.

Cheating on writing assignments has never been easier and teachers are, understandably, looking for ways to detect and hold students accountable for their academic work.

There are dozens of so called ” AI detectors” that claim to be able to identify the use of tools like Chat GPT and Google Gemini on writing assignments. Nearly all of these tools claim to be “the best,” or “most accurate” AI detectors on the internet.

  • One essay is written by a human 8th grader.
  • Four essays were written by AI.
